The Votes are in! Meet our 2019 JLT Community Iftar Hosts!

Streetery in cluster D will host our “Boodle Fight Iftar” on 29th May 2019

In 2018, we organised our first-ever JLT Community Iftar at Own Café in cluster I. This year, we wanted to put on an even bigger and better iftar and thought “Why not ask the JLT community to let us know where they’d like to gather for our 2019 iftar?”.

We put a poll on our Facebook page at the beginning of April and asked our fellow JLTians for their opinion of our three short-listed venues. Votes came in quickly and when the poll closed on 9 th April, the results were:

Streetery is our 2019 JLT Community Iftar host! Dubai’s first Asian food hall is a slightly off-beat destination in cluster D that evokes the street food and hawker stall culture of the Far East and brings together Thai, Chinese, Malaysian, and Singaporean cuisines in a lively food hall environment.

Nicky, Streetery’s inventor and owner, had the brilliant idea of turning this year’s iftar into a “Boodle Fight”. Don’t be alarmed – it’s actually a very Ramadan and iftar compatible concept, which, in many ways, takes us back to the original iftar spirit - a social event, involving family and community members, gathered over a potluck of simple, yet filling and tasty dishes.

A "Boodle Fight", in the context of Filipino culture, is the military practice of sharing a meal. For a boodle fight meal, the food is placed on top of a long table and in true military practice, diners sit in lines on both sides of the table.  The table contains the entire meal, with rice taking centre-stage and all other dishes, from starters to mains and sides and even desserts, placed alongside the rice across the length of the table. Once all guests have taken their seats, the traditional command for the boodle fight to begin is given:

"Ready on the left,
Ready on the right,
Commence boodle fight!"
